Facebook. I rarely get online without checking in there first. It's my virtual social outpost. The welcoming bar I belly up to where the drinks are cheaper, conversation wittier and the games free.
"Making your way in the world today
Takes everything you've got;
Taking a break from all your worries
Sure would help a lot.
Wouldn't you like to get away"
-- "Cheers" theme song lyrics
Sounds idyllic. Except I'm a freelance writer. Most of my working hours are spent online. So this pleasant outpost of enjoyment is actually a tempting productivity suck.

Me with my #1 Frenemy. |
It's not like online writers can ignore social networking completely. Especially the big FB. It's the perfect frenemy. So nice, giving us fan pages to sync up our work, blogs and tweets to broadcast to our network. Providing us with the perfect platform to build our fan bases and connect with clientele, all while insidiously claiming the time we are supposed to be writing.
Damn your usefulness.
So, yeah, Facebook, we can hang--when I have nothing better to do.
What's your Facebook relationship: friend, foe or frenemy?
Facebook is definitely my frenemy!
ReplyDeleteWhispers: I'm not on Facebook. (Listens to Gasps of Horror from around the web). I will get around to it at some point, but what with working, email, blogging, the occasional tweet, - that's all I can do as well as write stories. Any more and I'll be tipped flailing over the edge!
ReplyDeleteLOL I know, right? I'm a full-time freelancer as well and love the social interaction of the place, but dang! More than a few hours can become wasted there pretty quickly. Frenemy - haha, I like that!
ReplyDeleteIt's a frenemy for me to. I just cannot get on there when I have other things to do. My list just seems to fly out of my head.
ReplyDeleteFB is definitely my frenemy. ;)
ReplyDeleteThis made me laugh. It is so true!
ReplyDeleteFacebook is definitely a distraction, but some of us wouldn't have a life without it!
ReplyDeleteI am not on facebook much and am thinking of pulling the plug. It doesn't serve any purpose for me.
ReplyDeleteI always said I wouldn't do facebook but finally got an account. Still not sure why. I'm on a writer's facebook group that I need to get out of because it's just writers spamming each other constantly about their work and blogs etc. This weekend I watched The Social Media. Great movie!
ReplyDeleteI send over some of my post and occasionally go there and read what others are posting, but I'm not addicted. Twitter is even worse, I just don't get it.

I would say FB is definitely a frenemy (love the word btw). No matter how great my determination to limit my time there, I keep drifting back throughout the day.
ReplyDeleteI never thought about it that way, but FB is definitely my frenemy. Inevitably, as soon as I sit down at the computer to do some work, I feel compelled to sign into FB and see what's happening. Sad, sad.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the A to Z Challenge!
Facebook is my friend now that I've learned to tame. I check out my friends, my relatives (especially my grandchildren) and lately all of the A-Z Challenge blog posts.
